NEW! Maybelline Pure Pigment Review + Swatches

I always love to scan the new product areas in the drugstore and recently I spied this very intriguing product by Maybelline. The full name is: Maybelline Eye Studio Color Tattoo Pure Pigment Loose Powder Shadow, I don't know why these products have the longest names! A lot of people are skeptical about them, but I have had great experiences with loose pigment eyeshadows and I find that they often give the best color payoff. So, that coupled with the fact that these are from the Color Tattoo line made the purchase a pretty easy one to make!

I got the color Pink Rebel.

The packaging of this shadow is similar to what you see in a lot of Bare Minerals products. It comes with the little white covering that you have to peel off, which then exposes the little holes which release the product. The packaging is pretty standard for loose pigment.

To access the product I dumped a little bit out on the lid...if you have a different way of doing it definitely let me know! It applies very sheer when using a standard eyeshadow brush. It has a little bit better color payoff when you dampen the brush with water or setting spray before applying.

Swatching this product was not easy! Look how sheer it comes out (left pic)! I tried to get a better swatch with my finger tip, but even still it's not a great picture. The first thing I noticed was that this color is not pink as the label suggested! Its definitely a purple which I was disappointed by because I really wanted a true pink.

Again, not another great swatch, but the Maybelline pigment reminds me a lot of MAC Stars n' Rockets which is shown above. Stars n' Rockets is more purple, but they have the same type duo-chrome type shimmer. If you have Stars n' Rockets, you can get a good idea of what the loose pigment looks like.

This picture is a little scary, but I had to try and show the color a little better! This is what it looks like applied wet on the lid. As you can see, it has a purple/blue duo-chrome under tone color. It applied a bit patchy wet, but with some working it turned out not to be too bad.

So overall, I was disappointed with this product at first because I really wanted a bright pink, and what I got was a pinkish/purple. But when you get past the poor labeling, it's not a bad eye shadow. It definitely applies best when you dampen your brush first, and you may need several coats to get an opaque finish. I think some of the gold shades may be really pretty, so if you are interested in trying this out you may want to go for one of those instead of Pink Rebel which I chose. This retails for $6.99 wherever Maybelline is sold.

Hope this review was helpful! XO

    1. Glad you liked it! Pigments can be really do-able if you dampen your brush first!

  7. Yeah the color looks a bit washed out... I would have expected more from a pigment, what a shame.

  8. I've been thinking of buying some of this. I actually think it looks pretty! But if it doesn't do what you expect, then that sucks.
